What you see is what you get: How skin ageing affects your entire body

Published :September 10, 2024

Recent studies show that our appearance is more than skin-deep—it’s tied to our biological age. Interestingly, new research suggests that aging skin doesn’t just reflect aging, it also contributes to it. Damaged skin can release inflammatory signals that accelerate aging in other organs. Damage to telomeres—protective caps on our chromosomes—can lead to the rapid accumulation of "zombie cells," or senescent cells. These cells no longer divide and instead secrete harmful molecules that damage surrounding tissue, accelerating skin aging.

An article published in Nature Structural & Molecular Biology by Ryan P. Barnes sheds light on how oxidative stress targets telomeres in skin cells, causing senescence without telomere shortening. This breakthrough offers crucial insights into the aging process and highlights telomere integrity as key to maintaining youthful skin (Barnes et al., 2022).

This aligns with broader research on skin aging that emphasizes oxidative stress, such as from UV exposure or pollution, as a major trigger for premature senescence.

Protecting your skin isn’t just about aesthetics—it’s crucial for slowing down internal aging processes. Incorporate antioxidants in your diet, reduce sun exposure, and stay physically active to maintain both your appearance and overall health. Stay proactive, stay ageless.
