SEE Aging Graz 2025 (AT)

The SEE Aging Graz 2025 conference will be held 25-27 September 2025 at the University of Graz in Austria, in the “WALL” building. This international gathering explores how aging and old age are represented in literature, film, and visual arts across Southeast Europe—from the 1960s to the present. Emphasis will be on South Slavic (Bosnian/Croatian/Montenegrin/Serbian, Bulgarian, Macedonian, Slovenian) works, and contributions from Albanian, Hungarian, and Romanian cultures are also encouraged. The event aims to analyze both how artistic depictions have evolved and how they might influence attitudes, cultural mindsets, and social practices around aging.

Scholars are invited to submit proposals that offer in-depth analyses of narratives or images of aging, especially that trace continuities and breaks over time or compare different regional/cultural perspectives. The conference is organized under the research project “Transforming Anxieties of Ageing in Southeastern Europe: Political, Social, and Cultural Narratives of Demographic Change”. Abstracts are due by 15 February 2025, and a Call for Papers is open for contributions from literature, cinema, theater, and visual arts.
